FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 8 JANUARY 2018

A new collaboration will be revealed at FAWN’s season launch party, where the convergence between modular electronic music, opera and new classical music takes place.

TORONTO – FAWN Chamber Creative is ushering in 2018 with a multi-disciplinary day party on Sunday, January 21, 2018, at The Smiling Buddha from 2 pm to 6 pm. This event will highlight FAWN’s upcoming interdisciplinary projects for the 2017/18 season with a party that will bring communities and art forms together.

There will be two live performances, opening with one of Toronto’s leaders in analog synth music, Castle If. Her work is described as retro-futuristic “cosmic exotica” inspired by the strange sounds of the synth pioneers that forged electronica. The main event of the afternoon is a sneak peek performance that will shed light on FAWN’s newest music-theatre project as part of their Convergence Series. This collaboration brings together modular synth artist Acote, dancer Mary-Dora Bloch-Hansen and members of the FAWN Team. In sharing her reason for creating the Convergence Series, FAWN’s Founding Artistic Director Amanda Smith explains that, “One of the things I love most about music is the undeniable connections between different genres. I’ve always listened to electronic music with a similar ear as I do with classical and my experience as a listener is often comparable – so many intricate musical layers and visuals to explore.” She goes on to say that, “Modular electronic music has been part of the classical music world for a long time. Acote’s work is based in electronic dance music, not classical composition, but his work is deeply rooted in the same traditions shared by the FAWN Team. This makes for a very natural and exciting creative dynamic.”

At the event, FAWN will also be introducing two new additions to their team: Darren Creech (Producer and Resident Pianist) and Aaron Durand (Operations Manager and Resident Performer). The Convergence Series performance on January 21st will be these two artists’ first public appearance as part of the FAWN Team, alongside Adam Scime (Musical Director and Resident Composer) on double-bass and vocalist Jonathan MacArthur (Resident Performer). Stage direction and design will be provided by Amanda Smith, with makeup design by Erica Sun. There will be a silent auction throughout the event, where guests can bid on unique, and sometimes eccentric, items as they sip on day beers and take in the sounds of some of the most exploratory indie classical music artists in the city.

Admission is pay-by-donation, with proceeds going toward supporting FAWN’s innovative projects and artists. All guests must be 19+. Learn more on the Facebook event page.

About the Convergence Series:
FAWN has a particular interest in exploring art music with non-classical music artists. Cross-genre performances are another way they reach out to other communities and introduce new audiences to the exciting potential of today’s classical music.

FAWN’s first Convergence Series performance took place in 2013 at MOJO Lounge, an underground nightclub that has since closed. The night featured a cross-genre performance, integrating experimental electronic music by David Psutka (Egyptrixx/Hiawatha) with free classical improvisation, set alongside responsive projections by Brady Bothwell.
